"THE RELIEF OF THE EARTH"



Subject: SOCIAL SCIENCES

Course / Level 1º ESO

In this unit we are going to study the structure of our planet and how and when it was formed as well as the main features of the Earth's relief and what factors can transform it. Students will be able to understand how to act earthquakes, volcanoes and hurricanes and their destructive power.



1.- LEARNING OUTCOMES


-To learn about the structure of the Earth and how it was formed.

-To learn about the forces that shape the Earth's relief.

-To identify the main features of the Earth's relief.

2.- SUBJECT CONTENT


-The history of the Earth.

-The Earth's structure.

-Internal forces os relief.

-External agents of relief.

-Types of relief.



3. -LANGUAGE CONTENT/ COMMUNICATION


3.1 Vocabulary


-Nouns:ocean,continent, lithosphere, hydrosfere, atmosphere, biosphere, fossils, core, mantle, crust, tectotnic plates, arthquakes, volcanoes, mountains, plateaus, plains, basins, trenches, temperature.faults, folds,


-Verbs:to shape, to collide, to erupt, to modify, to erode, to deposit, to change, to fit.

-Adjectives:submerged, high, covered, deep, destructive, rocky, eroded


-Prepositions:by, below, over, under, to,



3.2 Structures


- Comparatives.

-Questions using what, when, which, who, where.


3.3 Discourse type


Reading, listening, speaking, writing.



3.4 Language skills


To use simple sentences in different modalities.(flash cards, pictures, songs, videos, texts, maps) in order to develop all kinds of student's skills in English trought the methodology proposed.


3.5 Contextual (cultural) element


Although this UD will worked for 12 year-old-students (1º ESO), it has been worked previously at school, so students have previous ideas on this subjects. In addition to that, they are concerned about different types of relief since they can see most of them (mountains, rivers, plain, valley...) around childrens.


3.6 Cognitive processes


This UD achives in the students a deeper understanding of the formation of the earth, its causes and consequences.



4.- METHODOLOGY

4.1 Key competences


Students, trought different kinds of activities proposed will improve their competence in linguistic communication (oral, writing, reading and listening), and digital competence through the use of the Internet, computers, digital whiteboard...


4.2 Organization and class distribution / timing


This UD will be worked in 6-7 sesions (two weeks roughly) and students will carry out individual, pair and groups activities.

5.- EVALUATION: CRITERIA AND INSTRUMENTS


5.1 Criteria of evalution:


- To know different parts of the Earth's structure and how it was formed.

-To understand the forces that shape the Earth's relief.

-To know the main features of the Earth's relief and to identify them.



5.2 Evaluation instruments:



Individual, pair and group activities will be assess, class notebook, class participation, interest in the matter, good behave, submitting tasks, as well as the appropiate use of new concepts and knowledge.
