JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH
Level: 1º ESO
Subject: Geography
In this unit, we are going to study the inner structure of the Earth. Students will learn how the relief has been formed and then, they'll be able to know the origin of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, how they work and their environmental consequences. At the end, they'll have to see the Earth in a different way. The Earth is a living being which is always changing;
Learning outcomes:
- To know inner structure of the Earth
- To know the formation of continents and oceans
- To distinguish the different landscapes
- To elaborate maps
1. Brainstorming: What is the relief? How it was formed?
2. Vocabulary activities to distinguish the oceanic and land relief
3. Reading about the last earthquake in Nepal ( a short piece of news)
4. Watching a video about Pangea ( a 225 millions of years puzzle)
5. Watching a video about the layers of the Earth
6. Investigating task about earthquakes in the last century and their consequences
Activities
1.
- They have to answer several questions to find a definition of relief and write the main ideas
2.
- Vocabulary activities: "match the words and the explanations", "What's the difference?" or "Complete the table"
3.
-After reading a piece of news they have to complete some paragraphs:
"Missing word activity". They also have to write the main ideas. At first, they must read the text individually. Secondly, they have to work in pairs or in small groups
4.
- Make a brainstorming activity about the movement of the continents, answering several questions: Why we talk about a 225 millions of years puzzle?
- Reading a short text which includes an explanation about continental drift. And more vocabulary activities
5.
- This video can help them to improve their vocabulary. They have to write the unknown words
- Complete a table with the characteristic of the layers of the Earth: depth, temperature…
6.
-They must to investigate about earthquakes. They are going to work in small groups. They have to search information about earthquakes in the last twenty or thirty years and they must elaborate an oral work or a power point and explain it in class.
- This work must include maps which show the location of places where the earthquakes happened
- Some interactive activities
Sessions
THE RELIEF
1. Answer the following questions
- What is the Earth's relief like?
- What do you know about the relief?
- What's the meaning of oceanic relief?
- Do you know what a mountain is?
- What's the different between a meseta and a plain?
- What's the meaning of crust?
2.- Read this short piece of news and find new words and their meanings
Nepal is used to quakes – this is one of the most seismically active regions in the world. You only have to look at the Himalayas to understand that.
The mountains are being built as a consequence of the Indian tectonic plate driving under Central Asia (the Eurasian tectonic plate). These two great slabs of the Earth's crust are converging at a relative rate of about 4-5cm a year.
3.- Identify the mountains of Spain (An interactive map)
THE CONTINENTAL DRIFT
4.- Find the missing word in this text:
In the early 20th century, German scientist 1______________published a book explaining his theory that the continental 2___________,far from being immovable, were drifting across the 3_______. He called this movement 4 _______________.
Wegener noticed that the coasts of western Africa and eastern South America looked like the edges of interlocking pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. He was not the first to notice this, but he was the first to formally present evidence suggesting that the two 5___________had once been connected. 6__________ was convinced that the two continents were once part of an enormous, single landmass that had split apart. He knew that the two areas had many geological and biological similarities. For example, 7__________ of the ancient reptile mesosaurus are only found in southern Africa and South America. Mesosaurus could not have swum the Atlantic Ocean. The presence of mesosaurus suggests a single 8__________ with many lakes and rivers.
Wegener believed that all the continents—not just Africa and South America—had once been joined in a single 9_________. This huge ancient landmass is known as10_______which means "all lands" in Greek. Pangaea existed about 240 million years ago. By about 200 million years ago, this supercontinent began11_________. Over millions of years, Pangaea separated into 12__________ that moved away from one another. These pieces slowly assumed their present positions as the continents.

5.1.- Vocabulary activity
Write the unknown words and discuss the meaning in pairs
6.- Final activity: Work in small groups and investigate about earthquakes
They have to search information about earthquakes in the last twenty or thirty years and they must elaborate an oral work or a power point and explain it in class.

Enhorabuena.
