THE METRIC SYSTEM

THE METRIC SYSTEM

·         TITLE OF THE UNIT: The Metric System

·         SUBJECT: Maths

·         COURSE / LEVEL: 1st Secondary

INTRODUCTION

Different units of measurement have been used in the past, some of them are still in use in UK and USA, but in most places is used the Metric System of Measurements.

The metric system is a system of units in which the multiple and submultiples of a unit of measurement are related by a multiple or submultiple of 10.

The metric system is used principally for the following magnitudes: length, capacity, mass, area and volume.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

·         To distinguish between magnitudes and units.

·         To apply the equivalences between length, capacity, mass, area and volume units.

·         To convert a measurement from complex way to non-complex way and vice versa.

·         To know relations between volume, capacity and mass units.

SUBJECT CONTENT

·         Magnitudes and units.

·         Length, capacity, mass, area and volume measurement.

·         Anglo-Saxon system of measure.

·         Solving maths problems.

TASKS

·         Textbook exercises from each section of the unit.

·         Written production tasks: Write 2 different word problems where the solution is given using the Metric System or the English system. Present the problems to your class then, listen to your classmates' problems and try to solve them.

·         Individual or group oral presentation.

·         Vocabulary Practice: Listen and fill in the gaps with the information that your teacher will give you.

·         Complete a crossword about magnitudes and their units. Work in pairs.

·         Find words related to the English System in this alphabet soup.

·         Answer some questions about the Metric System and the English System.

·         Exercises to convert each measure to different units.

·         Write the correct abbreviation for each metric unit. Try these conversions using the ladder method.

·         Solve the following word problems. Explain your reasoning.

ORGANIZATION AND CLASS DISTRIBUTION / TIMING

·         The methodology will be active and participatory in order to facilitate both individual and group learning.

·         The methodology will be applied through the establishment of work habits, including the most relevant activities in the student's book.

·         The most suitable number of sessions considered to develop the contents on this unit are: 6 sessions of 50 minutes each one.

ACTIVITIES

1)      A cord is 27 cm 2 mm long. How many pieces will there if we divide it into portions of 34 mm long each piece?

2)      The capacity of a tank of water is 3 kl 50 dal 5000 l. What is the capacity in decaliters?

3)      The area of a field is 3.12 hm2 14.6 m2 193.8 dm2. How many area is left to get 5 acres?

4)      Find out the volume of a cube whose edge is 3 cm long. Write the answer in m3.

5)      The volume of a tank is 6 m3 15 dm3 500 cm3. What is the capacity in liters?

6)      We want to fence a square field, whose side is 2 dam 50 cm long. How many meters of do I have to buy? If for 1 meter of fence we pay € 12.50, how much does it cost to fence all the field?

7)      The volume of a matchbox is 40 cm3. How many boxes can be placed into another box, whose volume is 1.8 dm3?
