Vocabulary

Relief (landscape, plateau, highland, rift valley, mountain range, basin, plain, lake, river, delta, archipelago, island),

Climate (equatorial, tropical, desert, temperate, continental, polar, oceanic, Mediterranean, steppe, high mountain, monsoon).

Structures

Making comparisons (the highest, the longest, the largest)

Example: The Nile is the longest river in Africa; The highest mountain in the world is Everest

To compare we use: __is longer than__; __is higher than__; ___is colder/hotter than___

Indicate position, giving examples, expressing facts, describing processes, giving definitions, describing relief.

Use the Present Simple.

Language skills

Reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Tasks and Activities

1.      Pre-reading task with the different continents: Africa, America, Asia, Oceania and Antarctica. Each Continent in one session.

Warm up activities, brainstorming and Structure of key language:

Where is the climber? The climber is in…….

What do you think is at the end of his rope? At the end of his rope …..

What equipment does he need? He need…….

The Nile is the longest river in Africa.

What do you know about America?

What is a continent?

Why are Europe and Asia separate continents? And why is America one continent?

What about islands?

Which are the three largest continents?

How many types of landforms can you see on the map?

Why some continents are less populated than others? Discuss in pairs.

Activities of Africa:

- Student works in pairs and groups using the map of Africa to answer the questions.

1.      Study the relief map of Africa and answer the questions:

a.      Which oceans and seas surround Africa?

b.      Where are the highest mountains?

c.      What is the largest island?

2.      Use the scale to calculate the distance from the Nile Delta to the cape of Good Hope.

3.      Copy the following table in your notebook and write two examples of African landforms in each column.

Mountain ranges

Highland regions

Plateaus

Lakes

Rivers

Islands

4.      Draw a map of Africa and locate the elements of the exercise number 3.

Activities of America:

- Have a group discussion to answer the question: What are the main features of relief in America?

- Look at the series of mountain ranges that run down the west of the continent and complete the table using an atlas. Which countries they cross?

The Rocky Mountains

The Andes

Guiana Highlands

- Which climates are found in North America? Which climates are found in South America? How can we explain some of the similarities and differences?

- In pairs, compare the landforms of Africa and America

- Draw a map of America and locate on it the most important landforms.

Activities of Asia:

- Which oceans, seas and mountain ranges surround Asia? Study the map and make notes about its boundaries.

- In pairs, complete a table in your notebook with the main rivers, lakes and mountain ranges of Asia.

- Investigate about one river in Asia. Find out which countries it goes through, which sea it flows into, and whether its flow during the year. Share your findings with your classmates.

Activities of Oceania and Antactica:

- Which islands and group of islands make up Oceania? Which is the highest?

- Which oceans or seas surround Oceania and Antarctica?

- In pairs, make a list of the climates found in Australia and new Zeeland. How many are also found in America?

3.      Writing and Speaking Task, individual, in pairs or in groups.

- In small groups of three or four, students choose a Continent to travel to and they collect information about their landforms, climate, countries, and the most important monuments. As they work through the unit, they collect information about their continent. By the end of the unit, this can form the basis of a Power point presentation or a poster using http://photopeach.com

- In groups of three or four, students decide which places the will visit on a journey from Mount McKinley in North America going south to Patagonia. They can work with Google Earth to pinpoint the exact places, and find both aerial images and ground views.

- Use the cardinal points to locate features on the map

- Where is the Dead Sea?

- Where is the Yellow Sea?

- Where are the Maldives Islands?

- Where are Asia's highest mountains?

- In groups of three or four they draw a map of Asia and locate the different climates with colours: cold climate is blue, hot climates are red, temperate climates are green,…

- Investigate about Australian Geographic at: www.australiangeographic.com.au/

- In groups of three or four, students will now work to research and write the "missing" page on Australia for their textbook. They will need to prepare: information about the relief and the climate, photos and activities.

- Write a description about the relief of one continent, including all the features that appeared on their checklist.

  1. Watching task.

- Three or four short videos on relief in different continents. Students have to identify the continent. Students compare the video with the checklist of relief features.
