This didactic unit has been planned for pupils in the 1st year of Primary Education. It is included in the area of Natural Science in English. Throughout this unit, the pupils will become familiar with several general aspects of personal hygiene and health, such as hygiene habits, healthy activities, healthy food, good sleeping and some common diseases.

  7. To identify some common diseases and what we can do to recover when we are sick.
  8. To work with others on collaborative tasks.
As regards language content and communication we present this vocabulary and structures:

This didactic unit will be developed in 6 sessions:
  1. Session 1: "I'm healthy!".
    1. We will start by assessing our pupils' previous knowledge on the matter. Flashcards with basic vocabulary related to the topic will be used. The pupils will play with the flashcards to review and consolidate what they may already know.
    2. Then, they will watch a video about healthy habits. It's called "Four rules for a healthy lifestyle". It contains no words, just pictures and music. https://youtu.be/jKikTtcqqzs
    3. As it is an introductory session to the topic, we will assess comprehension by making several questions about this topic. The grouping will be the whole class.
  2. Session 2: "Hygiene".
    1. As an introduction, two boxes (kind of urns) will be set in class: the "Healthy box" and the "Unhealthy box". All the flashcards with the main vocabulary from the unit will be introduced in those boxes/urns by some pupils in turns.
    2. Then, new information about "Hygiene" will be provided to the pupils with a worksheet. In small groups they will complete a table containing pictures and words of healthy and unhealthy hygiene habits.
    3. The pupils will do a listening activity (listen and number).
    4. Finally, the children will play an interactive game on the white board: https://learningapps.org/display?v=paoqrcca317 They will answer some questions about the game (speaking activity).
  3. Session 3: "Playing and resting".

  4. Session 4: "Healthy food".
    1. The children will sing a song about healthy foods. The song is called "Healthy Food vs Junk Food". This is a simple and funny song which can be modified by adding some extra lines including some more vocabulary of the unit. https://youtu.be/fE8lezHs19s
    2. New information will be provided to the pupils related to "Healthy and unhealthy food". They will read a short text about the topic. Then, they will do some reading activity: read and match, read and tick, etc.
