THE AGE OF DISCOVERY

Title: The Age of Discovery

Level: 2º E.S.O.

Subject: Geography and History

 

INTRODUCTION

The aims of this unit is to identify dates and events related to the topic, to know the most important conquerors (Columbus, Pizarro) and to know the characteristics of the society in Middle Ages: organization.

Students are going to study in a participative way the main historical events of this period, they will have to develop individual and group works to achieve the goals of this unit. There will be between 5- 6 lesson, and in each one of them students will have to take part of them actively. At the same time, the improvement of the following skills in English will be encouraged: Reading, Listening, Speaking and Social Interaction.

Students will be provided the key and essential vocabulary for the correct development of the unit; new daily vocabulary and specific one according to the topic. Of course, the necessary grammar estructureas will be taught so they can understand and express ideas to do the proposed tasks. Tasks are going to be very assorted, so that the different skills can be put into practice.

To complete the unit, the students will have to make a final work in which they will expound the acquired knowledge.

 

LESSON 1

In this first lesson, an on-line dictionary will be used by the students. They will be able to find the accurate vocabulary for this unit with the definitions and pronunciation of the words they look for.

The study of the lesson will start with a discussion to check the previous knowledge of the students, the teacher is going to ask some questions in an open class activity:

ü  Do you know any conqueror?

ü  Have you visited Trujillo?

ü  Have you ever been to America?

ü  Have you travelled by plane?

After that, a Power Point presentation will be display to give them a detailed information about the topic, with some illutrations.

Finally, they are going to work in pairs with a web page, where they can find further information.

 

LESSON 2

Here, the attention is focused on the voyages by Christopher Columbus. Students will watch a video with a summary of the different voyages and his biography:

Now, they will have to do an exercise with interactive map to locate the countries in Europe :

LESSON 3

In this lesson, students will read about "The Age of Discovery" in the recommended web pages by the teacher:

The final activity of this lesson consists of using a map of the period to explain what they know about "The Age of Discovery". (Groups of 4-5)

LESSON 4

This lesson is about the different conquerors of the period, so the students will have to read about other relevant conquerors and their explorations.

To check their knowledge, they will choose one of the mentioned conqueror and create a fake profile in "Facebook" as if they are the character telling their history and their explorations:

This is an individual activity. Students will visit the profiles of their classmates and make comments on them and any question they may want to ask.

 

LESSON 5

This part is thought as the final one, so students will have to develop a final project about the topic. This is to make a song, students will be organized in groups of 4 or 5 people and they must include in the lyrics as much information as they can about the topic of the unit.

    Me ha encantado el planteamiento que haces para desarrollar la metodología AICLE. Muy completa y en la cual se pueden desarrollar las destrezas que indicas en Language Skills.
