TITLE: Matter : pure substances and mixtures.
Subject: Physics and Chemistry
Course: 3º ESO
Language: English
INTRODUCTION.
I have never taught my subject in English with AICLE methodology, I have chosen this topic because it´s very practical and intuitive and students always enjoy these classes.
The most important thing about the lesson is learning the difference between pure substances and mixture and homogeneous and heterogeneous mixture.
OBJECTIVES.
-To classify as pure susbtances and mixtures.
-To recognise different types of mixtures.
-To know about different types of separating techniques .
- To understand the characteristics of homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures.
- To describe the most common techniques to separate substances in a mixture.
- To value the use and the importance of chemistry in our society.
- To understand the backwashes of chemistry in living beings and the environment.

METHODOLOGY
The methodology will be active and participative. Students will work in groups to practice their oral skills, they will listen to videos, write reports and manipulate lab equipment.
SESSION 1.
· Brainstorming about the topic.
· Classification of matter as pure substances or mixtures according to the number of substances.

· Answering questions:
Question | Answer |
What´s the name of a substance formed only by one component ? |
What´s the name of a substance formed by two substances in which you can distinguish them? |
Is milkshake a homogeneous or heterogeneous mixture? |
Is paella a homogeneous or heterogeneous mixture? |

· With salt, sugar, water, oil, sand, alcohol, students have to practise the different types of mixtures.
| Components | Separation Technique |
Homogeneous solid-solid
Homogeneous liquid-liquid |
Homogeneous solid-liquid |
Herogeneous liquid –liquid |
Heterogeneous solid-liquid |
Heterogenous liquid-liquid |

SESSION 4.
· Separation techniques for heterogeneous mixtures: Filtration and decanting.
· Separation techniques for homogeneous mixtures: evaporation and distillation.

SESSION 5.
· Lab experiment : Separation of a mixture with three or more components. In groups of 4 , students have to resolve how to separate the mixture.
· Calculate the concentration of solution : g/l and %
·
| Concentration ( g/l ) | Concentration ( % weigh) |
750 ml of water and 270 g of salt |
150 ml of solution and 15 g of nitrate |
3 l of solution and 56 g of sulfate |
