Unit 4: Animals
Course: 1º Primary
Subject: Natural Science
This unit is framed at the beginning of a new content block for the first course of Primary Education. The student has previously learned contents about his own body, good habits and healthy meals.
In this particular unit and in the following two, the main goal is that the student knows aspects of his/her nearest environment, and especially, the knowledge of other living beings (animals and plants).
Therefore, the first theme of this new block will be "animals". Great topic of interest for students as well as very motivating at these ages.
Objectives:
- To learn the names of some animals.
- To recognize and name living and non-living things.
- To distinguish between animals and plants.
- To find out how some animals protect their bodies.
- To learn the names for body coverings.
- To recognize what food animals eat.
- To identify and count some baby animals.
- To put a sequence of pictures in chronological order about the cycle of life.
The final task will be focus on the elaboration of an animal index card by using the contents the have learned during the lessons.
Activities:
The activities will be mostly based on speaking and listening. However, reading and writing will be taken into account as well.
SESSION 1:
- Activity 1: to introduce the topic, the first dynamic will be a BRAINSTORMING in order to know what children actually know about animals. The teacher will write the names on the interactive whiteboard.
SESSION 2:
- Activity 2: the teacher will show a picture of a landscape, and through several questions, children have to identify the animals they can see, distinguish between animals and plants, and also between living and non-living things.
SESSION 3:
- Activity 3: to learn the steps of living things' cycle of life we will use an interactive activity on the interactive whiteboard about de cycle of life of different animals as the frog, butterfly and a bird.
SESSION 4:
- Activity 4: This activity consists on making pairs with the vocabulary of animals body parts and coverings and some pictures. For this, teacher will present an interactive activity in the whiteboard.
- You can also present the contents as a test with the structer of the famous programme "Who wants to be a millioner?".
SESSION 5:
- Activity 5: To classify animals in order of what they eat, this activity presents a test in which each question is related to an animal which is actually eating, and children have to answer what kind of animal it is according to what they are eating at this moment.
SESSION 6:
- Activity 6: Teacher will show some flashcards to children about animals and their baby animals. And children have say which baby animal goes with its parents.
SESSION 7:
- Final task
