"Slumdog millionaire"


DIDACTIC UNIT FOR THE PROJECT "USO THE REA EN AICLE" SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE

                          Subject: Geography, 3rd grade

 


DIDACTIC UNIT: SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, THE FILM.

 

In this didactic unit, we are going to study different aspects about the modern India, its situation, society, economy, religion, etc, by watching the film "Slumdog millionaire" and we will try to extrapolate these characteristics to the rest of the world.

 

OBJECTIVES

 At the end of the unit, students will be able to:

Reflect about their knowledge on India, especially Geography and History.

Study about India's educational system, street children, society and caste system.

Understand poverty and its consequences.

Learn about living conditions in the slums.

- Know about largest cities in the world, overcrowded cities and pollution.

Summarize different effects of Imperialism.

- Express their own point of view about some actual world problems.

 

CONTENTS

-       India nowadays (society, economy, politics, religion, etc)

-       Civil rights.

-       The caste system.

-       Life in the slums.

-       Largest cities in the world.

-       Pollution.

-       Child labour.

-       Developing countries

 

VOCABULARY

-NOUNS: India, slums, children, child labour, country, developed, undeveloped, pollution, work, job, castes, luck, lucky, unlucky, system, society, economy, politic, religion, etc.

- VERBS: work, understand, believe, suffer, develope, undeveloped, etc.

- ADJECTIVES: developed, undeveloped, lucky, unlucky, believer, workers, poor, rich, young, old, etc.

- PREPOSITIONS: about, after, against, among, but, by, between, behind, beside, down, for, in, of, over, with, without, since, down, etc.

- CONNECTORS:  therefore, as a result, in conclusion, however, on the contrary, fortunately, in other words, etc.

  

STRUCTURES

- ROUTINES:  What do you think about?, Why do you think that? , Can you ? What do you know about ? , Can you give me an example of ?, Can you explain in your own words ?, Tell us something about?

- GRAMMAR CONTENT:  We are going to use some grammar structures to learn more about our unit: verb tenses (present and past simple, present continuous, future, going to…), comparatives, superlatives…

- CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT: Good morning, how are you?, open your book at page, Do you have any doubt?, What do you think about?,  Can you tell me an example? , You're going to work in pairs, You're going to work in groups of four, Do you agree with her/him about? , Please, open your notebooks.

- Exposition, narration, dialogue, discussion, etc.

- Reading, writing, listening and speaking

 

ACTIVITIES

- Explanation of general background about the unit.

- We watch the film

- Then, they analyse the most important aspects of the film

- We compare what they have watched in the film and India reality

 

ORGANIZATION AND CLASS DISTRIBUTION- RESOURCES/MATERIALS

The methodology is active and participative. The whole group watch the film and then in groups of four people they do the activities. Our resource is the film "Slumdog millionaire" by Danny Boyle.

 

KEY COMPETENCES

Communication in foreign languages: thanks to this unit, students will have the ability to express themselves and understand a foreign language according to their needs. They will have a positive attitude towards cultural differences and diversity and will acquire a curiosity about languages and intercultural communication.

Digital competence: they will be confident and critical about the use of Information Society Technology and will develop basic skills to use computers and the Internet.

Learning to learn: they will learn how to organise their own learning, to be able to deal with obstacles, being responsible with their own learning and to evaluate the outcomes of their learning.

Social and civic competences: the students will be able to deal with people from different backgrounds, have a knowledge about what is going on in other parts of the world, have ideas about concepts like democracy, citizenship, civil rights and participate in civil life.

 - Cultural awareness and expression: they will be able to appreciate the importance of expression of ideas, experiences and emotions.

 

EVALUATION CRITERIA

The students have to:

 

- Show their knowledge about India (as an example of developing countries).

- Reflect about child labour and civil rights.

- Are able to explain their point of view about what they have learnt with the film.

- Respect different opinions.

- Elaborate a Project about the film in groups.
