THE PLANT KINGDOM
This unit has been done for students in their 1st year of Secondary School to learn about The Plant Kingdom in the matter Biology and Geology.
The objectives of this unit are the following:
- To recognize main characteristics of plants.
- To understand how plants feed on, explaining photosynthesis.
- To describe reproduction cycle in angiosperm plants.
- To develop a positive attitude to biodiversity conservation
- To recognize and describe characteristics of plants by pictures and photos.
- To classify plants using simple keys.
- To describe organs and parts of a plant, flowers, fruits and seeds.
These objectives and contents will be worked through 6 sessions and one more to make a test.
Session 1: Introduction
We will see a video to introduce the topic (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pz4K5qpaNaY), reviewing the vocabulary previously learned and introducing new words. We will work on our Activity 1 (label the pictures with the names of the parts of a plant).

Session 2: Angiosperm and gimnosperm plants.
With this session he students will learn the differences between flowering and non-flowering plants, doing some exercises. When they understand, the teacher will explain that they have to bring (in groups of four) plants from the countryside and make a poster for the class.
Session 3: Classification of plants. Here they have to work in pairs, and search for information and names in English about plants that they know (ferns, mosses, herbs, trees, …).
Session 4: Reproduction of plants. They will see the next video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ycl2E9r-_o&t=10s).
Session 5: Nutrition and Adaptation. Students will work activities such as fill in the missing words and write the sentences on their notebooks. We could use the next link: http://www.neok12.com/Plants.htm
Session 6: This session will be used in order to make an oral presentation about the poster that they worked in groups of four students.
Session 7: Test and evaluation of a mind map of the lesson on their notebooks.
