- Local environmental issues.
- Global warming: causes and consequences.
- Assessment of the effects of renewable energies.
- Ways of taking care of the environment.
- Extreme weather: causes and consequences.
Timing: two lessons of 1 hour and 45 minutes each.
Lesson 1
- Class debate. One group of students will support urban areas and the other one, rural areas.
- Listening to three people taking part in a survey about their local area.
- Reading an article about a survey carried out in London, where residents talked about problems in their neighbourhoods.
- Discussing about the area where students live and the environmental problems they find.
- Reading a headline about polar bears and discussing about why polar bears are in danger of extinction.
- Identifying the present perfect simple and continuous structures.
- Discussing about changes in their environment using the new grammar structures.
Lesson 2
- Reading an article about eco-guilt and doing a questionnaire. Students compare their scores and explain why they feel / don't feel eco-guilty.
- Identifying the future perfect and future continuous structures and making predictions about what will happen in twenty years' time.
- Reading an article about the weather, identifying and describing different types of extreme weather and their causes.
- Revising an article layout.
- Role play. Students will read a situation about a company which will build a wind farm in England. They will listen to the government official talking to the company representative and then in groups, they will pretend they are attending to a meeting to discuss about the construction of the wind farm, showing different positions on the issue.
Writing an article describing one of the global environmental problems in the world today, its causes, and making some recommendations for dealing with this problem.
