The Collage

I. Introduction, learning outcomes and activities.


This unit belongs to the programme of subject Dibujo Artístico I, 1st course of level Bachillerato (Artistic Module). A contemporary society means a constant transformation and an extreme speed in which changes take place. In this scenario, The Collage aims to a multidisciplinary learning: foreign language + ICT + visual arts. The combination of these three blocks will provide students with the ability to face a globalized world. Here becomes essential to master a second language, technology involves our day by day and visual content is non-stop presented.


The use of L2 (English) will be about 50%. We will review the History of Collage in the main artistic movements and its evolution until contemporary artists. We will also learn how to make a Collage and how to use materials and techniques. Unit learning outcomes:


To know Collage as a plastic technique and its relevance in the History of Art.

To understand the plentiful personal expressive ways that Collage offers.

To plan the making of an artwork to reach a specific goal.

To develop technical skills and aesthetic sense.

To arouse critical attitude regarding the different compositional alternatives and materials to be used.


Activities overview.


Activities are meant to develop the creativity and the expressive skills of each student depending on his own personality. They will present their works in the final task, which will contribute to group learning and to critical thinking (feedback). Therefore, activities involve both an individual and a group approach.


Activity 1. Online test.

Activity 2. Practical task.

2.1   Drawing brainstorm.

2.2   Create a Collage.

Activity 3. Final task.

3.1   Write a report.

3.2   Exhibition.


II. Description of class sessions, activities and resources.


Timing of this unit is seven sessions according to the following plan:


Session 1.

Start‐up group discussion. We will start in Spanish to test your previous knowledge about Collage. Internet resources and tools like the smart board are useful in visual arts. These videos will be screened:

Session 2.

Subject content. We will approach these resources:

Texts.

Classbook. Dibujo Artístico I. E. Borgueño / M. Sánchez, McGraw Hill. IES Reino Aftasí.

Wikipedia. Collage, Assemblage, Combine painting, Decollage, Photomontage, Pop Art.

Session 3.

Activity 1. Let's see the composition, use of colour and light, textures, materials and technique of this work by Richard Hamilton. Answer the following questions... Approaching Collage.


Session 4.

Activity 2.1. Draw sketches with theme "The place where I live and I". Think of the connection between you and the environment in which you live (your routines). Brainstorming begins.

Think of a message that you would like to convey.

Draw at least two sketches so you will be able to compare ideas.


Sessions 5 and 6.

Activity 2.2. Create a Collage from your sketches. Use materials such as newspapers, magazines, cardboard, ink, watercolour, acrylic, etc. Create a Collage.


Session 7.

Activity 3.1 (homework). Write a report of Activity 2 by completing the following lines: Write a report.

Activity 3.2. Time to exhibit! Give a 5 minutes speech and present your artwork. Use your report as a guideline.

Don't be shy! None of your fellows is fluent in English.


III. Evaluation.


Criteria.

To convey a message through an artwork by choosing compositional and expressive ways according to a set goal.

To use materials and techniques with sense.

To be able to express oneself in English (writing and speaking).


Instruments.

The artwork evaluation will be based on these aspects: composition, use of colour and light, materials, technique and final achievement (practical task).

Presentation of works (final task).

Assessment of the attitude towards contents.
