GEOMETRY. POLYGONES.

My CLIL didactic unit has been done to students of first year of FP GS Building Projects (Proyectos de Edificación de la familia Profesional de Edificación y Obra Civil).  It is entitled "Geometry: Polygons" and its belongs to the subjet Building Representation (Representaciones de Construcción).

This unit is related to plane geometry, specifically how to draw and solve polygon problems. The relationship between geometry in general and polygons in particular has always been present in architecture and construction.

Learning outcomes

To know and classify the different types of polygons, as well as their properties and particular elements.

To solve problems of triangles graphically.

To build polygons from the data provided, applying the basic concepts of geometry and by using the appropriate drawing tools.

To analyze the enforcement of geometry in architecture and construction.

To use CAD programs to create designs with polygons.

To work with order and cleanliness.

Subject Content

        Basic concepts of geometry.

Classification ordered of the different classes of polygons, qualities and elements of each one of them.

Graphic construction of polygons starting from the starting data, using correctly the drawing tools.

Relationship between geometry and architecture. Enforcement of geometry in construction.

        Autocad 2017: polygons.

Unit organization: classroom sessions, activities to be performed and resources.

The unit will be distributed in 8 sessions of 110 minutes.

Class methodology will be active and participatory, creating a safe classroom climate and promoting collaborative work. We will start from the knowledge of the students, from particular to general, using close examples. The methodology will be flexible, establishing realistic challenges depending on each student and using the appropriate scaffolding for each activity.

1st session

Ø  Task 1:  Detect previous knowledge.

To begin, we will detect the student's prior knowledge. To achieve this, we develop an activity that consists of dividing students into two groups and asking them how many words related to the unit they know. Each group will have 5 minutes to write as many words as they can.

·         Task 2: Glossary of specific vocabulary.

We will continue with other activity:

Ø  Act. 2: Play and write your own glossary.

https://es.educaplay.com/es/recursoseducativos/4208875/geometry_polygons.htm

When students have the new specific vocabulary, they will create their own glossary.

2nd session

·         Task 3: Types of triangles and properties.

I will begin the second session with a presentation on triangles and properties.

·         Task 4: Special lines and points in a triangle.

To continue, we will do the following reading:

Ø  Act. 3: Reading: "The Special Lines and Points of a Triangle".

https://prezi.com/l2hhkauon1pj/the-special-lines-and-points-of-a-triangle/

To review the new content, we ask the students to perform a flash card activity.

Ø  Act. 4: Flash-cards: notable points and lines.

https://quizlet.com/113004667/triangles-notable-points-and-lines-flash-cards/

·         Task 5: Solve problems of triangles graphically.

Ø  Act. 5: Listen and solve I.

Finally, we will do a listening. We ask students to solve several triangle problems using in a piece of paper drawing tools, but the data will be provided for the teacher by reading them aloud.

3rd session

·         Task 6: Quadrilaterals.

We will begin the new session with a presentation on type of quadrilaterals and properties.

Ø  Act. 6: Listen and solve II

As on the previous session, we will do a listening. We ask students to solve several quadrilaterals problems using in a piece of paper drawing tools, and the data will be provided for the teacher by reading them aloud.

4th session

·         Task 7: Regular polygons.

I will begin the session with a presentation about types of regular polygons and methods to build them.  We will continue doing some activities.

Ø  Act 7: Link each regular polygon with its built method.

https://es.educaplay.com/es/recursoseducativos/4208901/regular_polygons.htm

To study star polygons we will to do a reading in class. Later, we will listen to solve several polygon drawing problems using drawing tools.

·         Task 8: Star polygons.

Ø  Act 8: Reading: "Star polygons".

https://www.dropbox.com/s/rd8d6x1o05g7slt/star%20polygons.docx?dl=0

Ø  Act 10: Listen and solve III.

Finally, we will make several online games to review how to solve polygon problems.

Ø  Act 9: Interactive geometric puzzle.

5th session

·         Task 9: Relationship between geometry and architecture.

In this session we will look for the students to realize the importance of geometry in architecture.

Ø  Act 11: Where is it?

As a scaffolding for this activity, the first example will be done in the classroom, so that the student knows exactly what to look for and the task is easier.

6th session

·         Task 10: Polygons with Autocad.

During this session we will use the computer to learn how to use Autocad to draw polygons. We will see a video in which he explains how to use the "Polygon" tool

Ø  Act. 12. Video: "How to Draw a Polygon in Autocad".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaB-bYyCWdo

7th session: Final Project.

·         Task 11: Relationship between geometry and architecture. Geometry in Islamic architecture.

We will finish this unit by studying one of the most representative uses of geometry in architecture: Islamic architecture. We are going to do the following reading:

Ø  Act. 13. Reading: "Geometry of Islamic architecture".

https://slideplayer.com/slide/6130923/

With this final activity we will put into practice what has been learned in the unit: resolution of polygons and use of drawing tools, using the new specific vocabulary.

Ø  Act. 14. Final project.

Work in pairs. Designing your own Islamic style tile. It is necessary to draw in your notebook and write the construction process. Finally, prepare a presentation to describe your pattern to your classmates and explain the construction process.

Scaffolding will be the previous reading "Geometry of Islamic architecture".  Also, we give show some examples of Islamic style tile and give student tips to present their pattern.

With this final activity we will put into practice what has been learned in the unit: resolution of polygons and use of drawing tools, using the new specific vocabulary.

  1. Hola Alba, he leído tu unidad AICLE. Lo que más me ha gustado son los ejercicios interactivos. Yo no te tenido suerte y no he superado la prueba de polígonos. Me queda pendiente, seguiré intentando. Enhorabuena por el trabajo.
