ELECTRICAL QUANTITIES

DU TITLE: ELECTRICAL QUANTITIES

CONTEXT: This unit has been developed in order to be taught at the beginning of the first term. It has been prepared for a 12-student classroom. The students are around 16 years old, their English level is about A2 and all of them have elemental knowledge about electricity.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  • ·         To know the different kinds of fundamental electrical quantities.

  • ·         To calculate current, resistance and voltage using Ohm's law in elemental circuits.

  • ·         To calculate power and energy in basic circuits.

  • ·         To measure electrical resistance, current and voltage.

SUBJECT CONTENT:

  • ·         The matter. Electrical charge.

  • ·         Electrical resistance and its measurement.

  • ·         Electric current and its measurement.

  • ·         Voltage and its measurement.

  • ·         Ohm's law.

  • ·         Electrical power and its measurement.

  • ·         Electrical energy.

SESSIONS:

·         Session 1:

o   Unit introduction.

o   Contents: The matter.

o   Activities: Warm up activity about the matter and basic electricity.

·         Session 2 and 3:

o   Contents: Electric charge and electrical resistance, electric current, voltage and their measurement.

o   Activities:

§  Color code activity

§  Conductivity and resistivity video activity.

·         Session 4:

o   Contents: Ohm's law.

o   Activities: Ohm's law video activity.

·         Session 5:

o   Contents: Electrical power and energy.

o   Activities: Voltmeter and ammeter activity

·         Session 6 and 7:

§  Wordsearch activity (https://www.educaplay.com/es/recursoseducativos/2415914/sopa_electricity.htm).

§  Electrical facts activity.

·         Sessions 8 and 9:

o   Final task: In 3-people group, the students must choose one of the electrical quantities, find information about it on the internet and make a 5-minute presentation for their classmates.

EVALUATION:

·         Criteria:

        The students:

o   Know the difference between direct and alternating current.

o   Understand the basic electrical quantities (charge, voltage, current and resistance), their symbols and their units.

o   Determine current, resistance and voltage using Ohm's law in elemental circuits.

o   Can measure the electrical quantities (voltage, current and resistance) in elemental circuits using a tester.

o   Calculate power and energy in basic circuits.

·         Instruments:

o   Tasks and activities.

o   Work observation: Using a rating scale.

o   Student's self-assessment.

  2. Una unidad bien estructurada, se comprende fácilmente qué conceptos se quiere trabajar en cada sesión y con qué actividades se va a trabajar. Sí me parece que podría haber más actividades y más complicadas para el nivel que está propuesta la unidad.
