Instrument families

Title: Instrument families.
Course/ level: 6 primary school.
Subject: Music.

In this unit students will learn the different musical instrument families and the most common acustic instruments, their names and their sounds. Furthermore, students will do a small writing, a small musical composition and a short presentation about instruments, their families and the composition.

Objectives:
  • To distinguish the different musical instrument families.

  • To recognize different instruments from their sound.

  • To write a small and easy composition with one instrument of each family.

Tasks:
Students will talk with their mates about musical instruments, they will listening to music and some videos in English, also will do a writing with information from different web pages, a musical work and an oral presentation. At the end of the unit they will do a self-assesment.

Sessions:

  •  1 session.

1. Brainstorming about musical instruments and families. Students will watch some vídeos and will visit Quizlet to do a small flashcards activity.

  • Videos:

  1. Strings.

  2. Winds.

  3. Percussion.


2. Oral explanation of the three instrument families with draws and sounds. Start listening to music. 30 minutes.

  • Exercise to write the name of the instrument family.


  • 2 session.

1. Play cards in group of three. Take a card and talk about the instrument. About 10 minutes. Start with "Have you ever listened to a trumpet, a violin...?"

  • Sheet with vocabulary and the place for the card.

2. Texts on the internet. Search for the information on the internet and take notes to do one writing.


Writing about instrument families. From 30 to 50 words each family.

Useful expressions and content:  High-pitched, low-pitched, higher, lower, big, small, play, hit, shake, blow in, drawing a bow across its strings...


  • 3 session.

1. One modified exercise from the unit "The Orchestra" by Junta de Andalucía and one exercise of listening to review some instruments and their families.


2. The composition. Template with chords, and measures (8 measures). Short explanation about the software (how to put notes on the staff, rhythms and how to select the instruments) and individual work with the computer.

3. Create a presentation with Google Apps about their own composition to show it to their classmates.


  • 4 session.

1. Show their presentations and publish with a free license. 3 minutes each student. About 40 minutes.

2. Self-assessment.
