DU TITLE: VICTORIAN NOVEL AND DRAMA

SUBJECT CONTENT:
The Victorian Age. General characteristics (examples of some of the most outstanding authors):
- Popular novel: Brontë Sisters, Charles Dickens, Rudyard Kipling, R. L. Stevenson.
- Theatre: Oscar Wilde. LEARNING OUTCOMES:
- To read English language literature texts: works and passages appropriate to students' ages and related to the studied periods.
- To recognise the general characteristics of English literature in the Modernist period, and to approach to some of the most representative genres, authors and works.
- To know and value the relevance and meaning of the studied texts; to appreciate the characteristics of the texts and their quality; and the significance of the texts with the passage of the years.
- To read commented narrative passages of some of the aforementioned periods, recognizing the themes and the elements of the text, inner structure, characters' behaviour, development of the plot, impact on the reader, etcetera.
- To recognise and value the great themes of the period and compare them in its treatment in texts of the literature in Spanish language of the same period.
- To compose texts of literary intention using the conventions learnt during the realization of commented readings, paying special attention to the use of imaginative vocabulary and varied literary and linguistic techniques, the choice of the style and the structure to achieve the supposed effects; and techniques to put together the information to pass on ideas, themes and characters.
- To consolidate the use of the library of the centre and of virtual libraries as a source of information and as models of written production.
- To develop the autonomous reading, and to appreciate the English literature of the period as a source of pleasure and of knowledge of other times and cultures, and to look for connections with the own culture to establish comparisons among them and the typical ones of the Spanish language.
- To carry out oral and written summary and analysis of a story and a plot of a book or other audiovisual document, and to express a critical personal judgment about it. To take an interest for the good presentation of the handwritten or digital texts, respecting the grammatical and the spelling rules and the typographical conventions.

1st and 2nd SESSIONS
Watch the video "The Victorian Age" and read the texts about Queen Victoria and Victorian Literature. In open class, discuss about them. In groups, look for more videos and information about the Victorian Age and its literature on the Internet. Share the knowledge acquired.

After reading the development of the plot in The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and analyse the impact on the reader, choose one of the scenes and carry out the writing of that scene.

10th SESSION
Read The Jungle Book at home (this activity must be assigned as homework well in advanced). Write a brief summary of the plot and a brief analysis of the characters and, finally, play Kahoot with questions based on the book.
