FIVE SENSES

We will develop this unit in 2nd grade of Primary Education, in the area of Natural Science.
With this unit children we will learn vocabulary relate to five senses and some grammar aspects as to have verb in present tense and the present of the modal verb CAN.

The objectives are:
  • To identify the organs of each sense and the sensation that they perceive.
  • To know and to value the relationship between well-being and the identification of their emotions and those of their classmates.
  • To communicate orally and in writing the results, presenting them with graphic supports.
  • To work cooperatively, appreciating care for their own safety and that of their classmatess, taking care of the tools and making proper use of the materials.
The Science Natural contents are:

  • The senses: organs and sensations. 
  • Feelings and emotions. 
  • Individual and group work.
  • Project planning and reporting.

This unit has been designed to spend about 10 Natural Science lessons, the activities will be the next ones:

Session 1:
Previous part: in whole group children we will answer some questions with flashcards about different body's parts. Then, they will do the main activity: Picture dictionary, where children have to join the picture with the correct name.
Final part: Metacognition: The Diary. Children have to write what have they learnt, what did they feel and why?.

Session 2:
Previous part: works in pair. Children practice orally about the five senses and their organs. They have to ask two questions about them to a partner. Then, they will do the main activity:  Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1xNuU7gaAQ . And questions about the video.
Final part: Metacognition: The Diary. Children have to write what have they learnt, what did they feel and why?.

Session 3:
Previous part: Individual work. Children have to make a list of things that they discover through each sense. Then, they will do the main activity:   PPT about four senses. After the ppt, they have to complete the list that they did in the previous part.
Final part: Metacognition: The Diary. Children have to write what have they learnt, what did they feel and why?.

Session 4:
Previous part: Cooperative work: ROTATING PAPER: Children have to make a list of things that they discover through each sense, acording teacher indications. We will focus this previous activity as a game where the group with the longest list we will win it. Then, they will do the main activity: Speaking activity: activity with cards about different items as music, colors, rainbow, a teddy bear, a flower,  … And children have to explain what organ or sense they use to discover the item. I can listen music with my ears. 
Final part: Metacognition: The Diary. Children have to write what have they learnt, what did they feel and why?.

Session 5:
Previous part: Song about five senses: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXXiyIGqliE. Then, they will do the main activity:  Wordsearch and crossword about five senses and the organs.
Final part: Metacognition: The Diary. Children have to write what have they learnt, what did they feel and why?.

Session: 6

Senses corners. Children have to discover different information with their senses in different corners. Each corner will be based in a sense and children have to make different activities in each one:

       What can you see with your eyes? Write 3 different sentences.

       Listen these sound and speak with your partners about them: what sound is it?, what do you fell?

       Guess what you touch with your close eyes. What do you feel?

       Yummy yummy: you have to discover what you are eating, but your eyes are close. The child who guess more food will be the winner.

       Smelling memorion: with cards with different information they have to discover only the cards about smell sense. Then they have to do a sentences and write it.: With the smell I discover flowers. With smell I discover parfum, …


Session 7:

Previous part: Individual work. Answer this question: What did you learn yesterday with the 5 senses corners?. Then, they will do the main activity:   Mind map about 5 senses.
Final part: Metacognition: The Diary. Children have to write what have they learnt, what did they feel and why?.

Session 8: 
Previous part: Song about five senses: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXXiyIGqliE. Then, they will do the main activity:  Venn diagram to compare 2 senses: what can you discover with the sight? What information can you discover with the smell? What can you discover with both?
Final part: Metacognition: The Diary. Children have to write what have they learnt, what did they feel and why?.

Sessions 9 and 10: 

And they have to make a final task: Posters  about the senses. In cooperative work, children have to make a posters where they explain and show the information about a sense. They can use photos, pictures, …
Finally they have to explain this task to the others pupils.
As other evaluation tool, children have to answer a kahoot about the five senses.

  1. Buenas tardes. Considero que la UD está muy completa. Sin bien, yo, personalmente, prefiero dividir las UD en actividades y no en sesiones, es mencionable lo bien desarrollada que tienes las sesiones, así como apoyadas con otros materiales. Saludos.
