World population

Introduction:

Extremadura has a low population density (26 inhabitants per km²). Departing from our cities and villages we'll know about how the population concentrates on cities and we´ll compare our Community with the rest of the world.

Topic

World population. vocabulary. Graphics and Pyramids. Interpret the data.

Objectives:

  • To know vocabulary related to population.

  • To know about the current and distribution of population.

  • To know how to interpret the data, graphics and pyramid.

  • To improve the reading, writing, speaking and interaction skills in L2.

  • To work in groups and improve social skills.

Task:

  1. Video. Introduction. 7 Billion, National Geographic. .

  2. Vocabulary  https://www.3dgeography.co.uk/population-words.

  3. Population pyramids: https://www.populationpyramid.net/. Compare some of them.

  4. Research about the population is closed to us. Create a form from census data.

  5. Review. Organise information through conceptual maps and share with their partners.

  6. Create a world map creating our own marks depending on the population from each place.

Timing: 6 sessions. 50 minutes each session.

First session.

  1. Take contact, ask students about global questions. 

How many population are in …? your village/ Spain/ France...Do you think the population in your village is rising? Which countries are the most populated in the world? And the least? Why? Which is the most important cause of mortality in developed countries? What about underdeveloped countries. (10 minutes). 

  1. Introduction video. Watch a video about population around the world. 

7 Billion, National Geographic. (5 minutes).

Discussion and move on vocabulary. (10 minutes)

  1. Vocabulary https://www.3dgeography.co.uk/population-words.

Explain and watch some photos to improve and  assimilate the vocabulary. (25 minutes).

Second session.

  1. Review from last day. What do you remember about population density, mortality... ? (5 minutes)

  2. Show some pictures to take contact with graphics and pyramids. Explain them (15 minutes)

  3. Practice. In pairs distribute some pyramids and they have to answer some questions. (15 minutes).

  4. Discussion and explanation about each pyramid. (15 minutes).

  5. Homework: listening

Third session.

  1. Review from the last day and correct the homework. Look at some pyramids on board and analyze (10 minutes).

  2. Research about the population is closed to us. (10 minutes)

  3. Look carefully at the census data and explain the stadistic. (10 minutes)

  4. Create a form from census data departing from our own data. (20 minutes).

  5. Homework: reading

Fourth session.

  1. Review from the last day and correct the homework. Look at some data and explain how could be the pyramids, the mortality…. (10 minutes)

  2. Review. Organise information through conceptual maps and share with their partners. (20 minutes).

  3. Explain how to do a writing review from data. Give a form and make the writing for extra work.

  4. Explain an activity in voicethread and practise in class. Speaking and exposition about our labour in class. (10 minutes).

Fifth session.

  1. Review for the test. 

  2. Listening and video activities to review vocabulary. (20 minutes)

  3. Reading activity. (15 minutes)

  4. Review vocabulary. Quizz, kahoot… (15 minutes).

Sixth session.

  1. Test population unit. Reading, writing, speaking and listening activities.
