Example of CLIL Unit for English language

This didactic unit is addressed for those students in 2nd level of Bachillerato and is called "In the Spotlight" as we will introduce vocabulary related to the entertainment.
As we have said before, the topic of the unit is entertainment. As such, all the contents here included will be related to that, for instance the listening of an interview or some tips to make suggestions properly.
Regarding the outcomes, we highlight the following ones:
- To listen to an interview.

- To use correctly the passive

- To learn how to make suggestions.

-To know suitably the content included in a radio interview.

- To write a critical essay.

- To discover vocabulary related to the entertainment.

- To understand a historical text with information related to the British empire.
At the same time, the main task will be to make an essay about the Commonwealth or the conquering of North America.

In relation with the sessions and the activities carried out in everyone of those we will mention the following:

Session one

In the first session of this unit we will explain the envelope activity and we will devote to this about 15 minutes. Once done it, we will explain the objective of the unit that will be to make an essay about the Commonwealth of Nations where the students will include the grammar given along the unit. The rest of the class will be devoted to explain the grammar of passive voice following the notes given to the students. Some grammar exercises will be given with that purpose.

Session two

In this session, we will start with the activity of the envelopes. We remember that the students will work with the vocabulary included in that session. After the activity and the correction of the exercises, we will practice a cooperative reading about a text based on the Commonwealth. With that activity, the students will know some new information about this content that will be essential for the final task of the unit.

Session three

Once again, we will start with the activity of the envelopes. Then, we will explain the activity based on the app MadLipz previously explained in the point 6.1. The reason of using this app is improving the oral expression in a funny way. At the same time, the student will practice with the grammar explained previously.

Session four

We will start that session with the activity of the envelopes. After that, we will start explaining the second point of the grammar that will be the comparative and superlative adjectives. The rest of the class will be devoted to practice practical exercises to reinforce the contents explained previously, that is, the passive voice and the comparative and superlative adjectives.

Session five

We will start with the activity of the envelopes. Then, we will make a listening in 15 minutes and the rest of the class we will start the activity of the mini debates. The purpose of that activity is to practice with the oral part.

Session six

We will conclude this didactic unit doing the final activity with all the information collected up to this point. We will remember to all the students all the steps that they will have to follow and the rubric by which this task will be assessed.

Last but not least, we shouldn't forget the materials with which we will work. The most remarkable ones are:

- Webmix of Symbaloo with several resources for the use of the language: https://www.symbaloo.com/home/mix/13ePLRbgiS

-Text of the Commonwealth https://www.weloveteachingenglish.com/en/free-english-graded-reading-comprehension/graded-reading-2016/348-what-is-the-commonwealt

Interactive exercise: We will use the app MadLipz

  1. Hola David. Tu unidad está correctamente secuenciada y usa recursos muy interesantes y atrayentes para los alumnos. Quizá en algunas sesiones planteas objetivos muy ambiciosos para el nivel cognitivo de esos alumnos, pero los recursos adicionales pueden ayudar en esta tarea.
