CLIL Unit: The British Isles

Unit: The British Isles

This CLIL unit has been designed for 3rdyear of ESO English pupils, it combines geography and sociocultural aspect with the English language.

Along the development of this unit, pupils will work on the four basic skills (reading, listening, speaking and writing) and also there will be constant interaction and warm up activities.

Contents and language are presented in an integrated and dynamic way, through games, challenges and interactive activities. This will contribute to trigger the use of the contents learners have been presented to. Besides, the activities of this unit have been designed considering different groupings and procedures.

The main aim of this unit is that students to broaden their knowledge on these islands, as well as their cultural richness through the language. From the first stage, in which a blank map is given to pupils, to the last stage, where they will focus on an area or city within the British Isles. Moreover, pupils will do tasks which could easily carry out in their daily life, such as check information in a website in English, move around a city with a map, and ask and follow directions to arrive to a destination.

Throughout the seven stages in which this CLIL unit is divided, several Key Competences will be developed at the same time that they work on contents and language. Most of times, it will be done through a communicative approach, in fact, the communicative approach and the task-based learning approach are the grounds in which this unit has been built on, without forgetting the scaffolding, key point in the development of the unit.
